About the AuSable River

The scenic Au Sable River flows from Grayling, Michigan to Oscoda Michigan into Lake Huron. Hunt’s Canoes offers trips allowing visitors to take advantage of all the river has to offer. Clear, clean water, great fishing, beautiful views, and sandy beaches.

The Au Sable River runs roughly 120 miles through the northern Lower Peninsula on Michigan. The river travels east, generally flowing at 2-4 mph, through Oscoda County, then Alcona and Iosco Counties. Much of the  Au Sable flows through Huron National Forest. There are six hydro-electric dams for the production of electricy along the Au Sable River. Behind each dam lies large ponds (but more likely viewed as lakes) that are used for all types of pleasure boating.

The lower half of the AuSable River, from Mio downstream to the river mouth in Oscoda, is commonly known as the AuSable River Canoe Area. Hunt’s Canoes offers canoers of all skill levels easy access to this entire area, but most regularly operates from the last dam – Foot Dam to the mouth of Lake Huron where our livery is located.
